Its focus right now is the joint N-deal committee and the Gujarat elections

NEW DELHI: The Left continued to spew venom on the UPA government, particularly on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, as it hit the streets as part of its opposition to the Indo-US Nuclear deal and naval exercises. In Kolkata, veteran CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu said the government will have to face "consequences" if it went ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal.

"The UPA government is trying to bring the country into the American fold which is against the Common Minimum Programme on the basis of which the Left is extending support to the Centre," Basu said.

The Congress leadership is inclined to ignore all that is being said at the moment. Their focus appears to be on the joint committee which it hopes will give it some breathing time till at least the Gujarat elections are over. It does not want to do anything that will divert attention from the elections scheduled for December this year. The leadership appears cautiously optimistic about its chances in Gujarat and it does not want a major political upheaval between now and the end of the assembly elections.

According to external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee the joint committee is likely to be in place in the next day or two.  Efforts are also on to tide over glitches like the composition of the committee and a lack of clarity on issues like its time frame.

Apart from the indecision over whether the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi will be a part of the committee, the left it appears is also insisting that the committee tenure should be time bound and that it should be in a position to complete its work and clinch the issue as early as possible.

The Congress is in no hurry and will only reassess their time table early next year.
