JAIPUR: Bears rescued from captivity will soon have an exclusive new home in Jaipur's Nahargarh Biological Park.

"An exclusive rescue centre for bears is being planned in the Nahargarh Biological Park where bears that have been freed from the captivity of performers and conjurers would be kept," L.N. Dave, Rajasthan's forest minister, told.

The centre would be run in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), forest department sources said. Three years ago, the Central Zoo Authority had sought assistance from Rajasthan to rehabilitate bears freed from kalandars, who train the animals and turn them into street performers.

In 1998, the Indian government had banned the use of bears for public shows.

After getting a nod from the state government, WTI recommended Jaipur and Shahpura as suitable places for bears.

On the basis of these recommendations, a survey was conducted in the Nahargarh park and Sanjay Van in Shahpura and the former was found more suitable for the rescued animals.

The Nahargarh park already houses two rescue centres - one for lions and another for tigers.

"We are being provided 50 acres of land by the state government for the project and once we receive a formal approval from the National Board for Wildlife, we will commence the project," said Vipul Chakrabrati, a WTI official.

Informed sources said that in the initial phase, 10-15 bears would be kept in the centre. It would be able to house 40-50 bears later. A special clinic would also be set up for the bears and forest officials would have an office, store and kitchen at the centre.
