The traffic police have said that there will not be any major traffic diversions in the city on Dahi Handi day. Most of the handis are placed in the by-lanes, which will not hamper the movement of traffic on the main roads.

“We have conducted meetings with Dahi Handi mandals across the city. We have requested the mandals to avoid keeping ‘matkis’ in the middle of the road to avoid traffic jams. We will ensure that traffic remains smooth on inner roads of the city,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) Vijay Kamble.

Kamble added that the police will ensure less traffic diversions because these tend to confuse the commuters. “In a majority of locations, Dahi Handi celebrations are over by evening. Traffic returns to normal after the event. It is only at a few places the event goes on till late at night,” Kamble said.

The areas to be avoided by vehicles on Tuesday are Girgaum, Kalachowki, Lalbaug, Parel, Dadar (W), Chembur, Vikroli, Andheri (E), Kandivali (W), Borivali (W) and Dahisar.  More than 2000 traffic police personnel will man the traffic throughout the day on the occasion of Dahi Handi. Additionally, local police will be on duty in their designated areas.

The police have also requested the mandal organisers to follow adequate security measures, in case of any emergency.

Drunken drivers beware!

Instances of drunken driving on Dahi Handi day is the chief cause for concern for traffic police. During festivals, there is an increase in the number of cases people drinking and driving. The police is gearing up to check that as well.

“We will keep a close watch on drunken drivers. On Saturday night alone, we registered more than 160 cases of drunken driving across the city. We will carry out special measures against drunken drivers on Dahi Handi day,” said Kamble.

When asked what preventive measures the police will take to deter eve-teasers and anti-social elements during the festival, Kamble said “We will keep a strong vigil on eve-teasers.”
