CHENNAI: Expressing displeasure over Centre's handling of Indo-US nuclear deal, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a constituent of the UPA, on Monday said comprehensive consultations with allies and supporters prior to the signing of the pact could have averted the present crisis.

"The text of the agreement was revealed only days after the pact were signed. The Government should acknowledge that there are serious concerns regarding the deal", IUML President G M Banatwalla told reporters here while asking the UPA government to address them in the nation's interest.

Asked about the IUML's move in the event of Centre going ahead with the deal, he said, "let us see what is the outcome. Then, we will take a decision". However, the question of withdrawal of support to the UPA Government did not arise at the national executive meeting of the party held hereon Sunday, he added.

Expressing 'apprehension' over India's growing relations with the United States and Israel, he said strategic military proximity with America would affect India's independent foreign policy and commitment to the non-alignment movement.

The country's collaboration with Israel seriously impaired and undermined its consistent and age-old support to Palestinians and their cause, he added.

Appreciating the efforts taken by the Centre upon Sachar Committee reports, Banatwalla urged the Government to table the report of Justice Ranganathan Mishra Commission on Linguistic and Religious Minorities in Parliament without any further delay in view of the prevalent "political uncertainties."

Banatwalla said the national executive of the party strongly protested the Centre's extension of visa to Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, despite IUML's plea to deport her.

"The continued presence of the infamous writer in India with her determination to persist with blasphemous writings and provocations to defy religion and religious personalities is in total defiance of Indian ethos and has also raised serious questions of law and order," he claimed.

He demanded that the Centre should revoke the visa granted to Nasreen, reject her application for citizenship and deport her forthwith.

Condemning the recent twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad as a "cowardly act to target innocent people", the IUML President urged the Centre and State Government to ensure "impartial and thorough investigation with open mind and to avoid targeting innocent Muslims with preconceived ideas having no basis".

He also condemned the "high-handed raids" on Madarassas in Hyderabad while urging to respect their sanctity.

Stating that courts have recently made several "interventions" into the rules of the Sharia, Banatwalla urged the Centre to take due cognisance of the judicial interventions in the Muslim Personal Law and bring measures to ensure continuance of Shariat laws.

Earlier, Banatwalla announced that the national executive had elected IUML Tamil Nadu President K M Kader Mohiden, MP, as the national vice president of the party and Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed as General Secretary.
