DVC gives Bhel a Rs 6,500 cr order boost

NEW DELHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) has won contracts worth Rs 6,500 crore from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).

It would be setting up two units of 500 MW each at Koderma Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Jharkhand and two units of 500 MW each at Durgapur Steel TPS in West Bengal.

The projects, slated for synchronisation during the 11th Plan, are aimed at supplying power to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Peak-hour availability of power in the national capital fell 1.1% short during the first quarter, Central Electricity Authority data said.

Bhel’s scope of work includes manufacture, supply, erection testing and commissioning of steam turbines, generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries, balance of plant and electricals besides state-of-the-art controls and instrumentation, electrostatic precipitators and switchyard, including civil works.

Bhel has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. So far, it has won 58 orders for 500 MW sets, of which 31 have been commissioned.

According to the company, it plans to introduce 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters. The company would also be enhancing its manufacturing capacity in the next three years, from the current level of 6,000 MW to 15,000 MW per annum with a total investment of around Rs 3,200 crore.
