NEW DELHI: The government has fixed a five-year tenure for All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director with a rider that his services could be terminated anytime in the public interest.
Moving the Bill, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said, "The director shall hold office for a term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office or until he attains the age of sixty-five, which ever is earlier".
The Bill, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2007, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The Bill, which has the same provisions for the Chandigarh-based PGIMER, said "Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-section (IA), the Central Government shall, if it is in the public interest so to do, have the right to terminate the term of office of the director at anytime before the expiry of his term by giving him a notice of not less than three months in writing or three months' salary and allowances in lieu there of".
The Bill also said that any person who is holding office immediately before the commencement of the Amendment of the Act his "appointment is inconsistent with the provisions of this sub-section, cease to hold office" and shall be entitled to claim compensation not exceeding three months pay and allowances for the premature termination of his office or of any contract of service."
A battle is on between Ramadoss and AIIMS Director P Venugopal over the running of the institute since last year.
An AIIMS body had recommended his ouster last year but it was stayed by the Delhi High Court.
