VADODARA: A Pakistani girl, admitted to the Fine Arts Faculty of the M S University, is quite happy at the prospects of getting a chance to stay in the country after obtaining a degree from the University.

Tatheer Daryani, earlier in the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture at Karachi in Pakistan, has joined the post-graduate course of the sculpture department.

Daryani is qualified for the course and added the reputation of the department attracted her, the Dean of the Fine Arts Faculty Deepak Kannal told here on Wednesday.

The faculty comprises artists like N S Bendre, Pradosh Dasgupta, Shanko Chaudhary, K G Subramayan, Dr Goetz and Ghulam Sheikh.

Daryani said many students from Pakistan also want to study here.

"They are eager to study here. So a Memorandum of Understanding between the Karachi-based institution and the city-based Fine Arts Faculty here will help in enhancing the cultural ties between the two countries," she said.

Her parents were against her pursuing her studies and wanted to get her married.

Though her great grand father came from Palanpur town of Banaskantha district bordering Pakistan, it was not the only factor which made her come here.

She said, "At first I thought I would be lonely in the faculty, but when I started staying here in the Iris Hostel of M S University, the response was warm."

Daryani said, "I was excited when I got the visa from the Indian High Commission within seven days which otherwise takes a long time."

Asked why she did not go to elsewhere for further study, she replied, "I wanted to study in a place which is near to Pakistan and also the Palanpur 'connection' brought me here."

Her family migrated to Pakistan after partition. Daryani said she wanted to visit Palanpur and added that she is fond of Hindi movies.

Daryani, whose does not have a family background steeped in arts, said her younger brother is student of an engineering college and elder brother is an MBA. Her father is a businessman.

She claimed that people in India are not aware that Karachi is liberal.

Daryani said that she has heard a lot about Navratri and Garba and added that her friends at the hostel are also talking about the festival.

"My friends have told me they would make me dance in this festival of nine nights. Girl students from other countries eagerly await for the arrival of this festival," she said referring to a number of foreign students from Iraq, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Australia and France studying in the city.

She said participation in festivals like Navratri can promote international integration. "I do not know Gujarati but I understand because my grandfather used to speak it and other members in the family also converse in it," she said.
