NEW DELHI: Have India-China relations hit a roadblock? The border talks are stuck; there has been little forward movement even after ten rounds of negotiations.

The special representatives of the two countries were scheduled to meet by July in Beijing but because of National Security Advisor MK Narayanan’s pre occupation with the 123 negotiations in Washington, the meeting got delayed.

The optimism which marked the relationship between the two Asian giants has vanished. Instead the same tired dialogue about Arunachal and refusal to grant travel papers to a local official, on the grounds he does not need permission as the state is part of China, has led hardliners to reiterate their rather myopic views about Beijing.

The Japanese-promoted idea of a quadrilateral, made up of US, Australia, Japan and India working closely together for disaster management and stability in Asia, is regarded by China as yet another attempt to contain its influence in the Asia-Pacific region. The talk of the arc of democracy stretching from the US through Japan, Korea and Australia right up to India, makes China uncomfortable.

Yet despite all the suspicion and angst India and China are not about to get into Cold War mode. Trade between the two countries is growing and is likely to touch over $20 billion at the end of this year.

Long time China watcher, analyst Alka Acharya of Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) is not pessimistic. “The boundary issue is a complex one and will take sometime to resolve. Now now that we have framework in place the negotiations will continue.’’

Archarya says India and China will jostle for power, but that does not mean that relations will deteriorate. After all China and the US continue to be suspicious of each other, yet their trade and economic ties are booming.
