Notable bridge collapses

PARIS: Some deadly bridge collapses around the world since 2000, including the one over the Mississippi River on Wednesday:

• March 2001: 58 people die as a century-old bridge collapses in Portugal, plunging a bus and two cars into a river.
• May 2002: 13 die as a barge smashes into a river bridge pillar in the US state of Oklahoma.
• July 2002: 14 die as a wooden bridge collapses over a lagoon near Lagos, Nigeria.  
• June 2003: Ten people die in the collapse of a bridge under construction in Jordan.
• Aug 2003: 20 children and an adult die as a bridge falls into a river near the Indian city of Mumbai.
• Dec 2003: At least 29 die as floods wash away a major road bridge in Bolivia.
• Nov 2005: The collapse of a bridge under construction in southwestern China kills at least 13 workers.
• Aug 2006: At least 40 die as rains wash away a bridge in northwestern Pakistan.
• Oct 2006: Five deaths when a bridge falls onto vehicles in Montreal, Canada. In the same month, five women die in Indonesia as a footbridge collapses during the Muslim Eid festival.
• Dec 2006: At least 34 dead as a bridge collapses onto a train in eastern India.
• July 2007: At least nine die as a bridge over the Mississippi River collapses in the northern US state of Minnesota.
