NEW DELHI: Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh is facing the heat of law after his granddaughter-in-law’s father has filed a complaint of dowry harassment against him and six other family members.

A complaint under the Section 3 of Dowry Prohibition Act and 498A under Indian Penal Code has been registered with Moradabad police station on the order of additional chief judicial magistrate at Chandausi on July 27.

In his complaint, Madhvendra Singh, the erstwhile ruler of Narauli, whose daughter Priyanka Singh is married to Arjun Singh’s grandson Abhijit Singh, has named the minister, his son Abhimanyu Singh, daughter-in-law Aradhana Singh, daughter Veena Singh, Abhijit Singh and two more relatives, Dilip Singh and Mandakini, for allegedly demanding a Mercedes car and a flat from him and torturing his daughter when their demand was not met.

Priyanka and Abhijit were married one-and-a-half year’s back.

Arjun Singh has strongly denied the charges and said that he has stayed away from the family matters of his son and is nowhere involved in the matter.

“This has cropped up suddenly. There could be a problem but I don’t know about it. I had gone a day before the engagement but nobody heard my suggestions in these matters. My opinion was sidelined during the wedding.

Hence, I distanced myself from the functions and did not even go for the marriage. I have nothing to do with it,” Arjun Singh said.

The veteran Congress leader has now vowed to defend himself in court. “I do not know what is the background of this allegation. I am seeking legal opinion now,” he said.

According to Moradabad Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Prakash the case has been registered jointly against the seven accused and fixing of charges will be done after investigations.

However, the Uttar Pradesh government has indicated that it may hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
