State govt and Rlys had included only 6 suburban stations

Chairman of the Railway Board, R Batra said on Friday that the Central and Western Railway chalk out plans to incorporate an additional 20 suburban stations to the proposed six that had been selected for the Station Area Traffic Improvement System (SATIS) project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).

In a bid to improve commuter and pedestrian movement as well as traffic circulation around railway stations, the state government and the Railways had finalised upon six suburban stations — Ghatkopar, Andheri, Borivili, Malad, Dadar and Chembur — where SATIS would be introduced. The project is aimed at developing and modifying the area outside railway stations. A feasibility study had pointed out that areas within the station also required to be developed. Accordingly, plans for the six stations were changed and incorporated improvement in passenger amenities as well.

“Central and Western Railway must each identify ten stations to be redeveloped in the next phase,” Batra told railway officials. He reminded officials of the long gestation period required before undertaking any project.

“Batra pointed out that we must keep plans ready so that once the first phase of six stations is completed, work can start on the newly-decided stations,” a senior railway official told DNA.

Batra has been instrumental in expediting a lot of infrastructural projects in the recent past. “It was due to his insistence and perseverance that the new rake has reached Mumbai. He has also taken sufficient care to ensure that the project to get new rakes does not get stalled,” said a railway official.
