A man, who allegedly made indecent phone calls to many Bollywood actresses like Kangana Ranaut and Kareena Kapoor was arrested and brought to the city.
Mairaj, who harassed almost 25 actors with lewd sms-es land, in police net
Finally, Mairaj Rehman is no more mobile. The 29-year-old, accused of sending threatening and lewd SMS s to at least 25 women actors finally fell into a trap laid by a joint team of Oshiwara and Bandra police in Hyderabad on Friday night. In all his SMS-s, Rehman signed off as Don.
Mairaj’s targets included Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Nagma, Poonam Dhillon, item-girl Rakhi Sawant, Sambhavna Sheth (Bhojpuri movies) and Nadini Jumani. There was also a spate non-cognisable offences against him registered at various police stations, majority of them at Oshiwara and Versova. They were mostly filed by lesser known names like Poonam Jhavar, Saadhika Randhawa and Diviya Dwivedi. Police suspected those as publicity stunts by the actors, who trooped into the police stations with a handful print and electronic media persons on tow.
Mairaj said after his arrest that some actors had paid him to send such sms-s, so that they could go and file complaint with the police, and gain media footage in the process. He also claimed that he was in love with Kareena Kapoor and had himself surrendered to the police.
He added that he was depressed after his wife Maanyata left her to settle down with Sanjay Dutt. It might be noted that Maanyata had filed a police compliant against Mairaz for harrassment and torture.
“Mairaj is a sweet talker. He was basically creating nuisance. He is talking too much and claiming so many things. So we are verifying his statements. Once caught he is trying to pass the blame to so many people. Even he says he was infulenced by the movie Don,” said Vinay Kumar Coubey, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-9.
Mairaj has studied BCom and came to Mumbai to become a Director and ended up being a junior artiste. Police said that he got the cell number of actresses through the offices of some production houses where he had visited during his struggling days in Mumbai. Mairaj has been remanded to police custody till 1 of August by the court.
Raakhee Sawant who was also disturbed by Mairaj’s phone calls and smses felt relieved and said that the police should teach him a befitting lesson. “I was never frightened, but he was disturbing me a lot during shootings,” she told the media.
“But he used to speak to me nicely and was smsing ‘sahayaris’. Sometimes in day 40 to 50 calls and I did not pick up them. He seemed adamant and would keep saying hello, hello for about 10 minutes,” said Nandini Jumani of Krazy
Kat fame.
