CHENNAI: Condemning efforts by some parties, including his ally the PMK to 'instigate people' against Tata Group's Titanium dioxide project at Sattankulam in Tuticorin district, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday said his government would not do anything to disturb public peace.

"Some mischievous people and germs in society are creating hurdles for a good project," he said while inaugurating the third phase of the state-wide financial assistance scheme for unemployed youths.

The government would not be adamant on setting up the factory and would leave the issue to be settled between the people and parties instigating them against it, he said.

In an obvious reference to PMK founder S Ramadoss' remarks that he was not ready to believe the assurances of the Tatas, Karunanidhi said 'it will be meaningful and appropriate to stay with you if you trust my words. Otherwise I will tell the people and go my own way'.

"I am following the footsteps of Periyar (Dravidar Kazhagam founder) and Anna (DMK founder) not for myself, but only for the welfare of the people", he said.

In an apparent reference to actor Sarath Kumar's opposition to the project, he said some people wanted to form a new party by instigating people against the project.

He also referred to Nandigram incident in West Bengal and said reactionary forces had instigated farmers and created a bloodbath in that state.

"Our friends should provide good suggestions and guide the government. We will do what is possible. If somebody can do a better job, I will appreciate them," Karunanidhi said.

Stating that his government was spending Rs 55 crore per annum to provide financial aid to unemployed youths, Karunanidhi said those who had passed the 10th standard would be given Rs 150 per month and those who had completed plus two, Rs 200. Graduates would be given Rs 300 per month.

"We have fulfilled only a small portion of your requirements. The amount is not important. You should see the compassion and duty consciousness of the government behind the scheme," he said, adding that the government was continuously fulfilling all its electoral promises.

About 3.38 lakh youths would benefit from the third phase of the scheme, the Chief Minister said.

Recalling that the previous AIADMK government had banned recruitment in government services, the chief minister said the DMK government had withdrawn the ban and provided jobs to 1.8 lakh persons.

"The DMK government initiated measures to start 11 factories in 11 months," he added.
