LONDON: England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff hopes to return to action on Sunday after rain ruined his chances earlier in the week.

Flintoff, who had hoped to return in Lancashire's abandoned second XI match against Derbyshire, is part of his county's squad to face Sri Lanka A, reports BBC.

The 29-year-old, out of cricket action since May after a third ankle operation, will play only as a batsman in the one-day match.

England paceman Sajid Mahmood, only two games back from a hernia operation, is also in line to face the Sri Lankans.

Flintoff will not bowl in competitive cricket until Lancashire are satisfied his ankle can stand up to the stresses of bowling fast again.

The all-rounder is eager to get back into action with a view to an England recall for at least part of the one-day international series against India, which starts Aug 21.

And his county may also field him in the Twenty20 finals Aug 4.

Mahmood took 1/56 from six overs in a day-night match at Northampton on Wednesday.
