LUCKNOW: There seems to be no end to the woes of Uttar Pradesh police. Despite eliminating Dadua and putting a tentative end to the dacoit’s gory exploits, the police are busy taming atrocities of his gang members.

According to reports from Bundelkhand, Dadua’s right hand man, Radhey alias Subedar, has joined hands with Thokia alias Ambika Patel.

“Dadua’s absence has made Thokia the undisputed leader in the area,” said a senior police officer, associated with the anti-dacoity drive in the ravines on the UP-Madhya Pradesh border.

“Ambushing the STF and swearing revenge against Dadua’s killing is Thokia’s recent claim to supremacy,” he said. The Thokia gang killed six STF men  on Sunday night about 15 hours after Dadua’s death.

According to sources, at least 20 hardcore members of the Dadua gang are still alive. There are reports that the group had managed to escape with a huge cache of arms, including AK-47 rifles, rocket launchers and grenades smuggled from the army, the officer added.

The caste factor kept the unanimity between warlords, Dadua and Thokia. Most of their gang members belong to the backward Kurmi caste. This prevented the two bandits from crossing swords, the officer said.

Over the past five years, about 50 dacoits have been killed in the ravines stretching from Auraiyya in UP to Bhind in MP. Joint operations by the UP and MP police have seen successes with dacoits like Jagjivan Parihar and Nirbhay Gujjar killed.

However, the anti-dacoity operations became politically-motivated over the past three years.  Brij Lal, additional DG (Crime, Law and Order), has been sent to camp at Chitrakoot to supervise ‘Operation Thokia’.

While the STF informers had infiltrated Dadua’s ranks, it may not be so easy to browbeat Thokia.  “He’s a smart strategist and not addicted to liquor,” said an officer.
