The family of President-elect Pratibha Patil was joyous at her election to the highest office and said they were confident that she would be a good President.
NEW DELHI: The family of President-elect Pratibha Patil was joyous at her election to the highest office and said they were confident that she would be a good President.
Patil's husband, son, daughter, daughter-in-law and son-in-law described her as a leader of their family and said she had devoted her entire political life to the welfare of people.
Patil's daughter Jyoti Rathor and son Rajendra Shekhawat said they were proud and happy on the elevation of their mother to the highest office.
"I am very happy. I have always called her 'tai'. She has dedicated her 40 years in politics to the welfare of people", Jyoti said. Her husband, Jayesh Rathor, said, "I feel proud. We are very happy".
Expressing confidence that his mother would be a successful President, Rajendra said as Governor of Rajsthan her routine was such that people used to visit the Raj Bhawan from morning till afternoon and then again from evening till late at night.
"Raj Bhawan was open to all and there were no restrictions. Her doors were always open to public. I have no doubt that my mother will prove to be a very good President", he said.
Manjari Shekhawat, Rajendra's wife, said, "She is not my mother-in-law, but my mother. She has always treated me as her daughter".
Patil's husband Devisingh Shekhawat said she would now be the head of her family.
"She will be the head of the family. It will now be a matriarchal family," her husband Devisingh Shekhawat jokingly remarked when reporters asked him today who would call the shots in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Shekhawat said one of his sons had taken charge of their family-run educational institution two years ago and he was no longer involved in their administration.
