YAVATMAL: The Maharashtra unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to Shiv Sena supreme Balasaheb Thackeray to reconsider his stand regarding his party's support to Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil in the larger interest of the nation.

Speaking to media persons at a press conference here on Friday, state BJP President Nitin Gadkari, asked the Shiv Sena leaders to vote for the candidature of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the Presidential polls.

Religion, language, region, caste and creed should not be the parameters for deciding the candidate for such a prestigious post, Gadkari said.

The selection should be made on the basis of the person's merit, he added.

Asked about the fate of the alliance in the State, in case Shiv Sena refuses to reconsider the decision, Gadkari said his party would call a state-level meeting after the Presidential election and a unanimous decision would be taken on the continuance of the alliance.

Meanwhile, the party is all set to launch two new welfare schemes to support the widows and children of the farmers who have committed suicide in Yavatmal district.

According to Gadkari, his party would launch two schemes called the `Family support scheme' (Kudumba Aadhar Yojana) and `Education Parent Scheme' (Shikshan Palak Yojana) across the district which aims to support 500 students and widows.

The scheme aims to provide a sum of Rs. 3000 per annum to the beneficiaries for five years and the scheme would be launched from Yavatmal in the month of September next at the hands of the Party President Rajnath Singh.

The party would accept donations from the philanthropists to raise funds for the schemes. I have donated Rs 1.5 lakh and popular TV artiste Smriti Irani has contributed Rs. 3 lakh respectively to the fund so far, Gadkari said.

The Congress-led Democratic Front Government has miserably failed to stop the spate of suicides by debt-ridden farmers in the state as its bureaucrats did not pay attentiontowards the ever-growing agrarian crisis of the cotton belt, he alleged.

Party MLA Madan Yerawar and other office-bearers were also present at the press conference.
