KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan on Saturday joined the chorus against appointing a foreign coach for the national team, saying it was 'unfair' when many talented coaches were present in the country itself.

Moin said the team did not need a 'high profile' coach being searched by the Board but a systematic 'planner' who could make things easier for the players.

"The team needs a coach. But not a high profile one like the Board has been saying in recent days. We need more off a planner someone who can make life easier for the players. We certainly don't need a foreign coach," Moin told PTI just couple of days before Bob Woolmer's successor is named on Monday.

"We have tried experimenting with foreigners in the past and I think the Board should appoint one of our own former players. There are many who if given the confidence are capable of delivering the goods," he added.

The former wicketkeeper-batsman, who remains one of the country's most endearing cricketers because of his spunky characteristics, said he was upset at the way the Board was treating its own players.

"We now have a full coaching structure in the country and some very good coaches in the National Cricket Academy. Guys like Mudassar Nazar, Aaqib Javed, Rashid Khan, Jalaluddin etc are very good coaches."

"But unfortunately there is no ultimate reward for them. When the time comes to pick a coach for the senior team you go for a foreigner which is unfair," he said.

Moin pointed out that being selected to play for the Pakistan team was the ultimate achievement for any player and at this level he did not need any coaching.

"What he needs is for someone to plan out the practice session and motivate him," he said.

PCB will select the new coach from three Australian candidates, Dav Whatmore, Geoff Lawson and Richard Done with the players said to be backing Lawson, the former Test bowler who played 46 Tests for his country.

Moin said it was time the former players stood up and spoke to the Board about the tendency to rely on foreigners for the high profile positions.

Reminded that the Board felt that local coaches became part of internal politics in the team and were not good man managers, Moin said if this was the case than it showed the failure of the Board to run cricket affairs properly.

"If this is the case and our own coaches indulge in politics than why not bring in foreigners for all the coaching positions in the country. What is said is not completely true and the fact is if the Board shows confidence in our own people and backs them they can do a lot better job."

The former player also refused to say who he would choose as coach from amongst the three foreign candidates, saying he did not know the coaching background of Lawson and Done.

Moin backed the appointment of Shoaib Malik as captain and said it was a good step by the Board and they were planning for the future.

"In the past also we have had young captains. I was very young when they first named me captain in 1995 and we had lot of senior players in the side. There is an element of professional jealousy but things do not get out of hand because most of the players are professionals and know what is expected of them."

"Malik has got the job because in the past he has shown with his performances in crisis situations for Pakistan that he has the temperament to deliver. He has a good cricket mind and it is a wise decision to try him out," Moin said.
