Even as the BMC claimed preparations to curb rain-related diseases were foolproof, the monsoon claimed its seventh victim in the last eight days.

A 37-year-old Malad (E) resident succumbed to malaria on Monday. He was under treatment at the KEM hospital for a week. Of the seven victims, five people died due to malaria, one due to dengue and another due to undifferentiated fever.

Two fresh cases of dengue were also reported from private hospitals on Monday. The disease claimed its second victim, a 22-year-old Kunal Trivedi, on Friday. The BMC admitted to the cause of death only on Monday after initial denials and much reluctance.

Trivedi, a freelance photographer died at the Karuna Hospital , Borivili, after slipping into coma last Monday. Deputy Executive Health Officer Dr Neera Kewalramani admitted that “the cause of death seems to be dengue” but was quick to add the patient had fallen off and suffered cerebral haemorrhage. This, while a family source said doctors had made it clear right from the start that he was suffering from dengue.

Kewalramani said civic hospitals admitted 265 new cases of monsoon-related illness in the last 24 hours. Among these, 159 (number of total cases is 1,108) suffered from fever, 94 (542) had gastroenteritis, three cases were that of suspected dengue (total is five till now), while nine (129) had malaria. Since July 2, 1,632 patients have been admitted to civic hospitals. Figures for leptospirosis remain at seven, with no fresh cases being reported.

Meanwhile, 28 cases of water-borne diseases have also been reported from private hospitals. Among these, Jaslok Hospital reported one case of dengue. Two other dengue cases came up in Smruti and National Hospitals. There were five cases of malaria from RK Mission in Khar and three from the Holy Spirit Hospital at Andheri.
