NEW DELHI: Unperturbed by the Opposition fusillade against UPA-Left Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has said the nomination was a 'historical milestone' and proved that no post in the country was beyond the reach of women.

"We have once again reached a historical milestone in nominating, through a consensus amongst the UPA allies, a woman candidate," Gandhi said in a 'Letter to Congress Workers' in the latest issue of party journal 'Congress Sandesh'.

Gandhi, who is also UPA Chairperson, said that Patil's nomination proved that no post, howsoever high in the country, is beyond the reach of women, who have contributed significantly and continue to make India proud.

The BJP-led NDA has made sweeping allegations against Patil in connection with her role in a cooperative bank, which have been dismissed as baseless by Congress.

Gandhi prefaced her remarks by saying that the UPA Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made inclusive development its goal.

"For the Congress, this means bringing in all those groups and regions that lag behind. The Congress is committed especially to empowering women and we have passed significant legislation such as the Domestic Violence bill and the Reform of the Hindu Property Bill in the past three years," she said.

Referring to the victory of the Congress-NCP alliance in Goa recently, she said that this has once again proved that the Congress agenda of inclusive growth and social harmony continues to find favour with people of the country.
