They will increase the number of seats by 2,000

The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will set up seven new engineering colleges in the state.

The move will increase the number of engineering seats by 2,000. The number of seats that was reduced by two private engineering colleges a few months ago had been restored.

“This year, there has been a sharp increase in the number of applicants for engineering. We have received over 52,883 confirmed applications for the existing 51,282 seats in 163 private, autonomous and government engineering colleges. The increase of 240 seats each in seven different private engineering colleges will accommodate all aspirants,” said NB Pasalkar, director, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).

Following the huge demand for branches like Electronics and Telecommunication, Computer Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering in the engineering stream, AICTE has allotted branches like Electronics and Telecommunication and Computer Engineering to two government engineering colleges - Karad Engineering College and Chandrapur Engineering College.

Meanwhile, private engineering colleges like DY Patil College of Engineering and KJ Somaiya Engineering College have been able to restore around 240 seats each. Following a dearth in infrastructure, AICTE earlier reduced the seats in private colleges.
