After Alistair Pereira, SRA, minor trafficking and conservancy workers, the Bombay High Court has now initiated suo motu action on a letter addressed by Janhit Manch, an NGO.

The letter, based on newspaper reports showing Thane Shiv Sena corporators evicting bar girls from their homes has now been made into a writ petition which is likely to be heard before a division bench of the HC next week.

The letter written to Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar states that the corporators, assisted by Kisan Nagar residents in Thane have violated the law by threatening, assaulting and forcibly evicting the bar girls from their homes while the police did not take any action.

The letter further states that the Sena corporators and the others alleged that the bar girls involve in prostitution and disturbed the atmosphere of the area. However, taking any action in this regard was the police’s look after, the letter says. “It is the job of the police to stop such nuisance. No party or people should usurp the role of police,” the letter states.

The police, however, took a stand that they could take action only of a complaint against the corporators was filed. The letter thus questioned if vigilance was the police’s duty or not. “If such criminal activity is allowed uninterrupted, the jungle raj and anarchy will spread elsewhere  too,” the letter says.

As per newspaper reports of June 6, in a drive against bar girls, Shiv Sena corporator Ram Repale had issued a June 11 deadline for the girls to vacate their homes in Thane. Over 2500 bar girls were being forced to evict their homes. In a move to ‘cleanse’ their locality the girls were coaxed to move to other places.
