A landmark decision that will change the way we park our vehicles on the busy streets in South Mumbai was taken by the BMC when it okayed the proposal to appoint architect Hafeez Contractor for the city’s underground parking at the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday.
As of now, two sites in South Mumbai have been earmarked for underground parking areas. While one is opposite Regal Cinema junction to Hutatma Chowk, the other opposite Mahatma Phule Mandal junction at Crawford Market.
These two underground parking facilities, which hope to accommodate 2,000 vehicles, it is hoped, will be an answer to the parking woes and traffic congestion that has pushed Mumbaikars to the brink for want of space.
Councillor Niyaz Vanu queried why tenders were not invited and felt the need to appoint Contractor for the project to which the municipal commissioner Dr Jairaj Phatak said, “We have selected him because of his innovative design sense and he’s one of the best in the industry. Proposals for mechanised parking proposals are also on the anvil.”
BMC has appointed Contractor for over five years and his professional fees will be 0.5 per cent of the project cost. The tender process has been initiated for the sites to be done on a Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) basis.
When contacted Contractor said, “The whole purpose of this underground car park was to relive the congested areas of parking. It was also suggested in an endeavour to relive the pavements of parking.”
When queried if there will be shopping areas in the underground parking spaces, Contractor confirmed saying, “The shopping areas are there to finance the maintenance cost of the underground car parks.”
