KOLKATA: Ten persons died as torrential rains today pounded this metropolis and adjoining districts, affecting road and rail traffic and severely disrupting normal life as the weather office forecast more rains.

The city experienced 163 mm of rains from 8.30 pm Monday to 8.30 am on Tuesday morning, met department Regional Director G C Debnath said.

The transport system was severely disrupted as arterial thoroughfares were under knee-deep water and some parts of the northern and western suburbs were totally cut off.

Eight deaths occurred in South 24 Parganas district, one in North 24 Parganas and one in the city.

Seven members of a family died when their hut collapsed in the rains at Nohazari village in South 24 Parganas early Tuesday morning, police said.

A housewife was killed when a house collapsed in the same district, they said.

One person was electrocuted at Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas, while another was killed when a house collapsed in the metropolis.

Kolkata's Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee said all 19 punping stations in the city were operating with 350 pumps, but it would take some time for the water to recede because of high tide in the Hooghly river.

Severe water-logging was reported from North and South 24 Parganas districts.

Local train services in the Sealdah South section were affected as the tracks were flooded, railway officials said.

Flights to and from the NSC Bose international airport were unaffected by the inclement weather, officials said.

The met department forecast more heavy to very heavy rain over the next two days in the southern part of the state.

"A low pressure area has formed over northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas. This will lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata," Debnath said.
