MUMBAI\INDORE: At least 49 passengers and four crew members of a Jet Airways flight had a narrow escape after a propeller driven ATR aircraft overshot the runway at the Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport on Sunday evening.

The aircraft veered off the runway after a rough landing around 7.40 pm caused two of its tyres to burst. The city had been experiencing heavy rainfall throughout the day. This is reportedly the second such incident at the city's airport in a month.

About 18 passengers received minor injuries. One of the air hostesses was admitted to the CHL Apollo Hospital in Indore after sustaining a spinal injury.

According to Dr HK Narayan, a passenger on board flight 9W 3307, "As soon as the plane touched the ground, there were two heavy jolts and the aircraft virtually bounced twice or thrice. We all sensed that something was terribly wrong with the aircraft. The aircraft came to a halt with a lot of judder. The emergency doors opened, but we jumped off before the slides came out."  A DGCA probe has been ordered into the incident.

According to the passengers they managed to jump to safety as the aircraft had buckled and it was just about four feet above the ground. The incident was reported by the CISF commandant at the airport. Deputy director, air safety, P Shaw told DNA that nobody has been able to reach the spot and it would be difficult to comment. Investigations will be carried out on Monday.

In an official statement from New Delhi, Jet Airways said, "The Delhi-Bhopal-Indore flight operated by ATR overshot the runway by a few meters. There have been no injuries to the passengers. The runway was wet due to heavy rainfall. The matter is being investigated."

Unconfirmed reports said the airport would remain shut till 12.30pm on Monday and there would be no take-offs or landings.
