MUMBAI: Even a day after AK Telgi, the fake stamp case accused, got sentenced to 13 years in jail and was slapped a fine, confusion loomed large over the exact penalty amount. If the fine amount was believed to be Rs 250 crore on Thursday, it swung between Rs 252 crore and Rs 250.8 crore on Friday. Last heard, the fine will be a little more than Rs 252 crore.
Neither the CBI counsel, Raja Thakre, nor the defence lawyers were sure about the amount on Thursday.
"According to the last official intimation on Thursday, the amount was Rs 202 crore," said Thakre. The discussions in the special MCOCA court over the fine amount continued on Friday, but it is learnt that no consensus was reached at between the CBI and the judge. The discussions are expected to continue on Saturday.
On Thursday, the special MCOCA court pronounced Telgi guilty on four counts under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. The special MCOCA judge, Chitra Bhedi ruled that Telgi would pay a fine of Rs 50 crore for each jail sentence of 13 years which would amount to Rs 200 crore. Another Rs 50 crore was levied on him under section 120 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Thakre said Telgi had been further asked to pay a cumulative amount of Rs 2.28 crore on Thursday for the other IPC sections under which he was found guilty. Regardless of the actual figure, lawyers say Telgi won't be able to mop up a big amount, given the fact that all his assets have been attached.
