NEW DELHI: In order to provide Internet and Cyber cafe facilities, RailTel is preparing to install advanced Wi-Fi systems at 500 Railway stations across the country.

"Though we are preparing to install Wi-Fi System at 500 stations across the country, initially we will be doing so at 50 stations," K K Bajpayee, Managing Director of the RailTel told reporters here.

He said one such system would be first provided at Bangalore Railway station, which would be operational within the next two-to-three months followed by Jaipur.

Bajpayee said "Airlink", a Bangalore based company, has signed an agreement with US based Rontog to provide technical know-how for the system.

Once in operation, the system would provide Internet and Cyber cafe facilities not only at the stations but within at least one km radius around the station it was installed.

In reply to a question if such a system could be operationalised in a moving train, the RailTel Managing Director said "definiotely it could be possible. It could be possible by eracting towers on the route".

However, he made it clear that at present there was no no such move to eract towers to provide Wi-Fi facilities in a moving train but it could be possible after two-to-three years time from now.

Bajpayee said RailTel was also in the process of shifting Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Freight Operations Information system (FOIS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS),  for train operations and Control communication on the OFC and MPLS network of RailTel.

"Huge cost savings are expected as all these applications will be transferred on a unified IP network which will be highly efficient and scalable," Bajpayee said.

He said RailTel's data connectivity at every Railway station on the OFC route will enable large scale opening of PRS/UTS facility, thus greatly benefiting common people across the country.

Leveraging technical expertise in Networking, he said RailTel has already initiated the process for connecting Railway Board with Zonal Railways, Production Units, central Training Institutes and other Railway Units through the Video Conferencing system.

The connectivity between these offices would be on RailTel's state of the art MPLS-ip Backbone and would enable Board to host regular and emergency meetings as and when required, he said.

In another major initiative, he said Railtel has plans for launching National Long Distance (NLD) business and has already signed IUC (Interconnect) Agreement with major telecom operators like Airtel, Idea, TTSL, TTML, and HFCL among others.

The NLD infrastructure, which is currently under implementation, would be based on state of the art Next Generation Network (NGN) technology and will enable operators to offer cheaper STD Services to subscribers using RailTel's NLD network, Bajpayee said.
