LAHORE: Fearing intelligence reports that the administration of the Lal Masjid has called in its suicide-bombers from the Waziristan region to target government personalities, the Musharraf regime has deployed security forces around the mosque. The regime has decided to carry out a military operation to put an end to the standoff at the mosque situated in the heart of Islamabad.
More than 1,000 rangers can be seen surrounding the vicinity of the Lal Masjid and the Jamia Hafsa seminary with barbed wires. Personnel of the Punjab Police, Elite Force and the Federal Capital Police, armed with sophisticated weapons are also deployed 200 yards from the mosque.
The move comes after the abduction of nine Chinese nationals and reports of possible suicide attacks. The deployment of security personnel clearly suggests that the government has decided to put an end to the day-to-day interference by the clerics of the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa.
The Lal Masjid brigade has responded to the challenge by setting up positions on the roof and the four corners of the mosque. Many of the stick-wielding students have come out of the mosque and blocked the road in front of it. They have stored a large quantity of stones on the roof. They were also seen laying broken electricity poles and branches of trees to block the roads in front of the main gates of the mosque.
On the other hand, lead cleric Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi has declared that the students would offer their strongest resistance if any operation was carried out. He said, “If the government does not withdraw its forces, we will announce jihad against the present regime.”
