Helicopters were air dropping urgent relief aid on Thursday to some of the more than 8,00,000 people battered by monsoon spawned flooding in coastal areas of Pakistan. The army took over the relief operations, using 14 helicopters and C130 transport planes to reach areas in most need of help. Khubah Bakhsh, the provincial relief commissioner, estimated that some 2,00,000 houses had been destroyed or damaged.

Floods in eastern Afghanistan triggered by unseasonal downpours have left around 56 people dead with about 100 plucked to safety overnight with the help of NATO helicopters.

Lashing storms blamed for at least 11 deaths dumped up to 45 cms of rain in central Texas, flooding towns and stranding dozens of people on rooftops, cars and in trees. No fatalities were immediately reported, in the latest in a series of storms that killed at least 11 people in the past week and a half.

Britain was braced for more rain, with forecasters warning that an inch of water could fall overnight in northern England, the Midlands and Wales, with heavier showers likely at the weekend. The extra rainfall could put pressure on areas already affected by flooding this week that lead to the deaths of four people, the Met Office said in a severe weather warning.

The fourth major storm to batter Australia’s east coast this month is causing major flooding in Victoria and whipping up mountainous seas along the eastern seaboard. A man was killed by a falling tree and hundreds of residents were fleeing the rising flood waters. The floods in Victoria are the worst in 17 years with warnings issued for 10 rivers and creeks.
