MADURAI: Coming down heavily upon the ruling DMK, its ally PMK on Thursday wanted the police to be 'allowed' to function 'independently' without political interference to check the crime rate in the state and to "restore" Tamil Nadu's reputation as a 'tranquil state'.

Speaking to reporters, PMK leader S Ramadoss said: "Police should be allowed to function independently without political interference so that the crime rate would come down in next three years and the reputation of Tamil Nadu as a tranquil state could be restored".

Chief Minister M Karuanidhi had earlier remarked that the "liver" of the Police department was spoiled during the AIADMK regime, he said adding "during the AIADMK regime it would have got spoiled, now it has completely gone".

"The nexus among the police, criminal and the politician was mainly responsible for the murders and robberies occuring in cities like Chennai," he charged.

Recently, after a man, reportedly belonging to Congress, was found murdered and his head and torso recovered from different places, the government had said that the entire police team in the particular area would be transferred, he claimed adding "nothing has happened so far".

He said that a separate wing should be created exclusively for dealing with the organised crimes. The officials in the wing should be thoroughly trained in investigation and intelligence.

He also wanted to bring in a Maharashtra model act--Control of Organised Crimes Ordinance, 1999. The cases against organised criminals should be tried within three months and the perpetrators sent to jail within that time.

Efficient and qualified persons should be brought to the fore in the police department for effectively maintaining law and order.

"The situation was so worse that entire police set up in important places of Tamil Nadu needed to be shifted", he claimed.

He said 'Vision 2020', a document with suggestions to make Tamil Nadu a socially and economically developed state, has been prepared by the PMK and would be circulated among people, NGOs and experts for gathering their opinion.
