LONDON: Rajeev Ram is a name that would not make many heads turn in India. But Rajeev Ram, a professional tennis player from the United States, would indeed draw immediate attention as he steps out on court at Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Ram booked a place in the men’s doubles draw of Wimbledon through the qualifying rounds, partnering Israeli veteran Harel Levi. Ram is ranked 94 in the world in doubles and 175 in singles.
That is perhaps the reason that 23-year-old Ram has appeared in every US Open men’s doubles since 2001 but progressed beyond the opening round only once, in 2004.
Born in Denver, Colorado to scientist parents Raghav and Sushma Ram, Rajeev moved with his family to Carmel, Indianapolis, where he finished high school.
The Unites States Tennis Association (USTA) national under-14 title in 1998, the under-16 crown two years later and the under-18 the following year brought Ram into the limelight.
After finishing high school, Ram took some time off to concentrate on his tennis and even toyed with the idea of turning professional.
But a last minute change of heart saw him join the University of Illinois where he trained under Craig Tiley. He finally turned pro in 2004.
This year’s Wimbledon is the second time Ram has entered the grand slam event. He has admitted that he dreams of making an appearance on the famed Centre Court at least once. If he manages that, Ram is sure not only USA but most of India too will cheer for him.
