NEW DELHI: A galaxy of senior Congress leaders are playing Professor Higgins to Pratibha Patil’s Elisa Doolittle to prepare her for the arduous Presidential campaign that begins from July 1. The idea clearly is to ensure that she does not end up putting her foot in her mouth like she has been doing in the last few days.
The UPA leadership is working on plans to unveil Pratibha Patil before the national media once the campaign starts where she will answer all the charges levelled against her in recent days. “She has absolutely nothing to hide and once presents her case before the world those slandering her will be the ones running for cover,” says her chief election agent and I&B Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi.
The shy 72-year-old former Governor is being prepared to face the toughest queries prepared by senior leaders like Pranab Mukherjee, Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, and Prithviraj Chauhan with inputs from Sharad Pawar and a senior left party leader. These leaders have scrutinised all the relevant articles related to the allegations made against Pratibha Patil and she is being encouraged to shed her reticence and tell her side of the story on the issues raised by her opponents.
Her election managers have chosen to hit back at the NDA. Dasmunshi launched a counter offensive against Leader of the Opposition L K Advani for describing Patil as tainted. “There is not a shred of evidence against her. She has not been mentioned in any FIR, any audit report or chargsheeted by the court. To label a lady who is all set to become India’s first woman President as tainted is deplorable and undignified,” said Dasmunshi.
