AHMEDABAD: The Karanaj police recovered a chemical bomb from Lal Darwaja and arrested a 23-year-old Kolkata resident Rashid Ali alias Abdul Ali. He allegedly arrived in Ahmedabad on Tuesday evening via Mumbai, carrying the readymade bomb all the way from Kolkata.

At around four in the evening, sub inspector Chetan Goswami received information about suspicious activity of a person carrying a bag, who finally dumped it at the AMTS bus stand opposite State Bank of India.

After reaching the spot, the police team opened the bag and found a steel canister inside the bag and decided to call for the Bomb Disposal squad (BDS) who recovered the bag and took it to a nearby ground to dispose off the bomb. The bomb was chemical based with Potassium Fluoride and Arsenic Sulphide soaked in kerosene and packed with 25 heavy iron pellets.

“The chemicals were stored in two steel cans — one smaller and other bigger than that. Heavy amount of some saffron powder was used between the two canister to avoid friction as the whole material was highly volatile and could have caused a heavy explosion even with a small jerk,” said assitant commissioner of poice Rajendra Sinh Rana, Karanaj police
station.
