KOLKATA: West Bengal's ruling Left Front on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of resumption of an all-party peace meeting at the state-level on Nandigram in the near future and said it would be held at the local level.

Senior Left leader and the state secretary of the Forward Bloc Ashok Ghosh said that he had telephoned Left Front Chairman Biman Bose as state Congress working President Pradip Bhattacharya had sought to know the fate of the postponed all-party meeting on Nandigram.

"I had a talk with Biman Bose and it was decided that at the moment instead of the state-level all-party meeting to discuss ways to restore peace in Nandigram, the local and block level meetings would be held," he said.

Ghosh said the East Midnapore district administration was taking the initiative for local level all-party meetings and both sides were showing a "positive" attitude.

Asked whether the all-party state-level meeting was required at all, Ghosh said, "If necessary, it definitely will be held and in such an event we (Left Front and Opposition parties) will have mutual discussions".

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had walked out of the first state-level all party meeting on Nandigram convened by Ghosh on May 24 in protest against CPI(M)'s 'justification' of the March 14 police firing which left 14 people dead there.

Mamata had, however, subsequently said she was not averse to attending another all-party meeting if it was convened by Forward Bloc.

The state Congress had last Sunday written to Ghosh seeking to know the fate of the postponed all-party meeting at the state level and felt resumption of talks was necessary to pave the way for the return of peace in Nandigram.

Ghosh, who was the convenor of the last state-level all-party meeting, relinquished the responsibilities at the subsequent Left Front meeting after CPI(M), lead partner in the Front, made it clear that local level all-party meeting would be more successful in facilitating the return of those who fled following sporadic violence in Nandigram.
