GUJARAT: A Congress leader on Sunday staged a protest at a women's convention here being addressed by the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that his government had failed to nab the persons who killed a woman of the Koli community in Saurashtra.

The incident prompted Modi to blame the Congress for trying to disturb the Women's Mega Convention that he was addressing.

As Modi was addressing a large gathering of women in this tribal district, woman Congress leader P Taviyad, who was in the audience, stood up and held a banner that read: "Modi government has failed to nab the killer of Chandni, daughter of Koli Samaj in Saurashtra."

One woman was raped and another found murdered, both from the Koli community, after they had gone to Junadgarh last month.

Another woman stood up to support Taviyad, causing confusion that prevented Modi from speaking for some time.

Despite Modi's appeal to people to sit down, the disturbance continued for some time.

Modi asked security personnel to take both women out of the convention. He told them to treat the women nicely and to offer them water and cold drinks.

After the women were taken out, Modi told the audience that Sonia Gandhi and Congress had deliberately caused the commotion out of frustration as assembly elections were round the corner and the party did not stand a chance of winning.

Modi reminded the Congress that it was his government that had prepared a helipad in the tribal district to enable the party president to address a public meeting on January 20.

Modi said Gujarat government was first in the country to provide property rights to women and made it compulsory to write mother's name in school records.

If the property is purchased in the name of a woman in Gujarat, it is exempted from the registration fees, Modi said.

Modi made another announcement under which name of woman will be added in the property to be given under various government schemes to dalits, poor, OBCs and other sections of the people.

Gujarat government will suffer financial losses due to exemption in registration fees given to the women, Modi said, adding such historic decisions are going to empower the woman which is a great achievement for his government.

Speaking on the occasion, Gujarat Education and Child and women welfare minister Anandiben Patel said 'Vijyalaxmi Bonds' of a total amount of Rs sixty crores were given to six lakh girl students in the state for enabling them to complete their studies as government is keen in bringing down the dropout ratio.
