Death toll mounts to 41 in AP

At least 41 people were killed as heavy rains lashed several parts of Andhra Pradesh causing extensive damage and disrupting traffic.

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said the rain-related casualties in the state has increased from 30 to 41 as heavy rain lashed Rayalaseema and Costal Andhra regions.

While 20 people were killed in Kurnool district alone, Guntur reported five, Prakasham four, Karimnagar and Kadapa three each, Hyderabad two, East Godavari, West Godavari, Srikakulam and Mahaboob Nagar districts one each.

After revewing the flood situation with ministers and officials here, Dr Reddy said 36 tanks were breached in the Rayalaseema region. Two Choppers were  pressed into service to rescue the trapped from inundated villages.

He said 95 relief camps were set up and more than 56,000 people shifted to the relief centres.
 
The District Collectors of coastal Andhra and Telangana regions were instructed to take precautionary measures in view of heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
