Passengers arriving at Terminal 1A of the Chhattrapati Shivaji International Airport are facing a tough time as the flight information display screens show incorrect messages. On Monday, the status of IC 866, Indian’s Goa-Mumbai flight, which arrived at Mumbai airport at 8 am, was being displayed as ‘Expected at 8.15 am’.

G8 105, GoAir’s Mumbai-Goa flight, which left Mumbai at 2.10 pm, was shown to be ‘Rescheduled for 2.35 pm’. While the status of IT 640, Kingfisher’s Mumbai-Delhi flight, which left the city at 3.45 am was still being shown as ‘Now Boarding’ even at 4.00 am.

The display errors have left passengers and their relatives perplexed. “My husband was flying to Goa by GoAir. His flight left on time at 2.10 pm, but the display board continued showing the flight’s status as ‘Rescheduled till 2.35 pm’. I was shocked and even tried calling him to verify if the flight had indeed left,” said Shruti Sinha.

Conceding that the display screens were erroneous, an airport official said, “We keep receiving complaints from agitated passengers and have seen for ourselves that the exact status of flights on the flight information display screens is often wrong.”

The erroneous nature of the screens is similar at the Chhattrapati Shivaji
International Airport at Sahar.

“During the cyclone in Oman, the display screen at Terminal 2A of Sahar Airport showed the IC 685 Mumbai-Muscat flight as ‘Scheduled’, even though no international flights were operating to Muscat,” said Manisha Chattopadhyay, a passenger.

The Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC), said this was due to the airlines not giving them information correctly. “Airlines keep changing their schedules till the last minute. These days, we are directly monitoring the flights and send the information to the studio from where the schedule is sent to the display board. We have called a team of experts from South Africa and Australia to establish a foolproof system. We now have two people working on arrival and departure flights separately, the system will take time to settle,” said an AOCC source.
