Yet again, a Rajnikanth-starrer got the reception it is so much used to. Hordes of fans hit the streets to celebrate the release of Sivaji, his latest film which is touted as the most expensive one at Rs 95 crore.

Fans from across Mumbai, and particularly Dharavi, which has a large south-Indian population, went into a frenzy at the film’s release. The Matunga theatre which held the first show of the film, Aurora, needless to say is house-full for the next whole week.

Sivaji comes after Rajnikant’s ‘Chandramukhi’ that hit theatres two years ago and drew a large crowd, but Sivaji has surpassed all that in terms of fan frenzy and the elaborate kick-off the fans had organised on Friday.

Aurora, which has unfailingly screened all of Rajnikant’s blockbuster films, witnessed mobs jostling for space, wanting to be the first to tow in to the theatre. “He’s our god, the true superstar. I worship him,” said an emotional Selva Raja, a Dharavi resident. On Dharavi streets, there were festive decorations with life-size cuttings of the heartthrob.

On Friday afternoon, a group of about 50 die-hard fans in Dharavi were preparing for a procession, Armed with dhols and marigolds, they were headed for the 6.30 pm show at Aurora. “I have not missed even a single film of Rajni,” said Maridas, the 70-year-old tea-stall owner from Dharavi who can narrate dialogues of most of his films on an instant’s notice.

Residents said, in the last few days there have been several poojas and yagnas performed by fans wishing the superstar success. In the 90-feet-road of Dharavi that mostly houses Tamilians, life-size hoardings of Rajnikant with folded hands welcomed motorists and pedestrians, while emotional fans also shouted slogans hailing the star.

The mood was eclectic among all — the young and old, men, women and children all buzzing Sivaji. “Rajni looks stunning in the film. I’m certain it will break all records set by the star himself or anyone else in Bollywood. It will be a super-duper hit,” said 45-year-old Chellama.
