AMRITSAR: Former Congress MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa, facing murder charge, on Thursday allegedly attempted suicide in a lock-up at Beas police station.

He attempted suicide while a police team was interrogating him, Amritsar (rural) SSP Iqbal Singh said.

He said Dimpa hit his head against a wall in the lock-up and a case under section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the IPC was registered against him.

Dimpa, allegedly involved in the murder of Akali activist Dilbagh Singh on January 29 in the runup to Punjab assembly election, surrendered on Wednesday.

He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate of Baba Bakala who remanded him to two days police custody.

An FIR was registered against nine persons, including the former Congress MLA and his brother Harpinder Singh Rajan, following the murder of the Akali activist.
