Investigation is on against a jawan held recently for his alleged Lashkar links.

The security forces, engaged in counter insurgency operations in Kashmir, are rattled by the increasing number of militant moles infiltrating into their ranks.

In another such incident, the army in the state has started investigation into the alleged links of a jawan with the Lashkar-e-Toiba after police arrested some people, including a soldier, in the border district of Poonch two days back.

Lieutenant Colonel SD Goswami,  defence spokesman at Jammu, said Qadir Bhat, the suspected mole, has been handed over by the police to the army.

“He was handed over because by rule, the police cannot keep him in their custody,” he said.

The incident is a major blow for the army owing to the serious threat it poses to the security apparatus in the state, police said.

For the past few months, the police have busted several modules which were part of the militant strategy to infiltrate into the armed forces.

On February 2, cops arrested Shamim Ahmed, an army jawan posted in J&K Light Infantry (JAKLI) Regiment for having links with militants in Poonch district of Jammu region.

A Border Security Force (BSF) soldier was arrested for selling an AK 47 assault rifle in Rajouri district of Jammu in March. The rifle was possibly seized from militants in anti-insurgency operations and was not shown in records by the constable.

In July last year, three army jawans were arrested from Surankote and Mendhar for having links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba.
