THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Charging the LDF Government with total failure in tackling the spread of viral fever in Kerala, senior NCP leader K Karunakaran on Tuesday demanded resignation of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan.

The Chief Minister should resign as there had been complete failure of the government machinery in bringing the situation under control, Karunakaran told in a press meet here.

He said Achuthanandan was trying to hide his failures by projecting the eviction drive in Munnar as a big achievement of his ministry.

In fact, the Chief Minister had no 'control over any of the departments'. This had become increasingly clear from the 'inept' handling of the grim challenge posed by the outbreak of fever.

Thousands of people were suffering from diseases without getting proper medical attention or food, he said.

Ridiculing the government for calling in the military to deal with the crisis, Karunakaran said the reserve force in the state police should have been pressed into service before seeking the help of defence teams.

NCP's MLA from Kuttanad, Thomas Chandy, who was also present, said the government had completely betrayed the paddy growers in the rice procurement scheme. Though the stockpile had been lifted after much hue and cry, the farmers were yet to get the price for that, he said.

Chandy said he would go on an indefinte fast before the assembly if the issue was not settled before the commencement of the monsoon session.
