After networking website Orkut, it is the turn of “overcharging” schools to face Sena ire. While admonishing all those schools that have been charging ‘too much’, the Shiv Sena’s youth wing, the Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Sena, has asked them to immediately curb the practice or be prepared to brave protests from Sainiks.

To make their point, an 80-strong BVS team led a morcha to the Sacred Heart School in Worli on Monday, to protest against the high prices of study material and fees charged by the institution. “The school administration is fleecing children by charging Rs1,540 for study material worth Rs466. This was brought to our notice by some aggrieved parents,” said Nitin Kadam, BVS’s South-Central Mumbai Secretary.

The protestors, however, were stopped at the school’s gate a police squad. After meeting the school administration, Dinesh Bobhate, BVS state secretary, said, “The school’s principal has assured us that he will look into the matter. He said that he was unaware that the students were being overcharged for the study material. We have given them a day to sort the matter. If the school continues in its ways, we will do the needful.”

Bobhate added, “If we come across any schools that are overcharging students, be it in terms of fees or study material, they will be dealt with, Sena-style.” Urging parents to report any such instances, he said, “They can register their grievance with us.”

Meanwhile, sources in the BVS revealed, “The youth wing may hold protests against two more Dadar schools on Tuesday.” Meanwhile, Sena councillor and BMC’s education committee chairman, Mangesh Satamkar said, “It must not be made binding on the students to purchase study material from schools.

If a school is overcharging students or has made purchase of study material from the school mandatory, a complaint can be lodged with the civic education department. Parents can also lodge a complaint with the cops.”

No one from Sacred Heart School was available for comment.
