ITBP conducts search at roof collapse site

CHANDIGARH: The personnel of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on Monday conducted fresh searches at the city's biggest vegetable market where a roof collapsed killing two persons and injuring 13.
    
The search came after National Disaster Management Authority instructed the National Disaster Rescue Force, a wing of ITBP which has expertise in conducting operations by drilling through the rubbles, to inspect the site to see whether anyone is still trapped inside.
    
"We have completed the initial searches and are waiting for orders from the Chandigarh administration to start removing the rubble," ITBP Vice Commandant Surender Khatri said.
    
During the searches, the ITBP personnel have recovered a number of items, including a cash box of a trader containing some money.
    
Two persons were killed and 13 injured when the roof of the City's biggest vegetable market collapsed last evening while at least 50 persons had a narrow escape.
    
The local administration has called off the rescue operation late last night after five hours of work, sople could be trapped in the debris.
    
An inquiry has been ordered into the mishap. There were complaints that the 30-year-old shed housing the vegetable market was not properly maintained.
    
A case under Section 304 A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was also registered by the local police against unknown persons.

State government announced a compensation of Rs two lakh to the kith and kin of each of the dead and Rs 15,000 to the injured.
