Police arrest rowdies, history-sheeters in Chennai

CHENNAI: In an operation aimed at curbing the increasing crime rate in this city, police have arrested 503 rowdies and history-sheeters.

Police have also intensified crime control measures, including 24-hour patrolling and vehicle checks at important points, after various incidents of crime were reported from many parts of the city.

A police statement said teams, comprising sub-inspectors and head constables from each police station, were involved in the operation that led to 503 arrests last night alone.

The arrested included 386 rowdies, 67 history-sheeters and 12 accused who had been undergound for some time. Execution of arrest warrants were pending against the remaining 38, it said.

Police also intercepted a lorry that did not stop at a check-post and seized iron rods worth Rs 1.50 lakh.
