10 HuM militants surrender before J&K CM

Ten militants of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) outfit, including five self-styled commanders, surrendered before Ghulam Nabi Azad in Doda district.

JAMMU: Ten militants of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) outfit, including five self-styled commanders, surrendered with weapons before Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in Doda district on Tuesday.

The surrendered militants included a divisional commander, a district commander, a deputy district commander, a tehsil commander and one section commander, Senior Superintendent of Police, Doda, Manohar Singh said.

Barkat Ali Mir alias Shakeel alias Babar of Bharti Gandoh area of Doda district, who received training in Pakistan, was among the ten, Singh said. Mir, active in militancy since 1998 was presently the divisional commander of HuM in Doda.

Abdul Gani alias Hamad of Chanyas, Gandoh was active since 1998 and was acting as district commander of the outfit, Singh said adding, another Pakistan-trained militant Javed Iqbal alias Rizwan was active since July 2002 and was presently deputy district commander of HuM.

Alam Hussain alias Dilawar Khan of Nali Dolu area was operating since 1998 and was the tehsil commander of HuM, while Manzoor Ahmed alias Abu Tallah of Amritpura Chinyas was active since 2003 and acting as section commander.

Other five militants have been identified as Akhter Hussain alias Osama, Ghulam Hussain, Anayatullah Khan, Talab Hussain and Jan Mohammad alias Baba -- all belonging to Doda district, the SSP said.

The militants, at the time of their surrender, handed over four AK rifles along with 16 magazines and 440 rounds, one pistol with two magazines and 16 rounds, one self-loading rifle with two magazines and 20 rounds, one 303 rifle with two magazines and 34 rounds and one Insas rifle with two magazines and 40 rounds.

They also submitted one under-barrel grenade launcher with four shells, 10 wireless sets, eight walkie-talkie sets, one satellite phone, one binocular, two IED remote control devices, five detonators, one grenade and two rubber-stamps of HuM outfit, the SSP said.

During their interaction with the Chief Minister, the militants told him that they are fed up with militancy and expressed their desire to lead a normal life.

Azad assured them that they will be given all benefits as per the surrender policy and all steps will be taken to rehabilitate them.

Chief Secretary C Phunsog, Director General of Police Gopal Sharma and other senior officers were present on the occasion, Singh said.
