CHENNAI: K Padmarajan, the country's most unsuccessful candidate as per Limca Book of Records, on Tuesday filed his nomination for the June 15 Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu.

The 49-year-old businessman, who had earned the sobriquet 'King of elections' for having thrown his hat into the ring against the "Who's who of Indian politics" filed his papers before Returning Officer Naresh Gupta at the Secretariat here.

Though he paid the deposit amount of Rs 5,000, which was refundable, his nomination paper was not supported by the signature of at least 20 MLAs as required, thus facing rejection on scrutiny.

Padmarajan, who filed his nomination against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on May eight for the biennial polls from Assam, said that he had so far filed 83 nominations right from the cooperative society elections to Presidential polls.

Stating he would file his papers for the June 26 Madurai West by-election on June one, he expressed hope that his efforts would help him gain an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.

"I wanted to create an awareness among people that even a common man could aspire for the highest office in the country," he said and claimed that he had so far spent about Rs 10 lakh on contesting elections in the last two decades.

Padmarajan, who is running a tyre retreading unit at Mettur in Salem district, has contested against several bigwigs including President A P J Abdul Kalam, his predecessor K R Narayanan, former Prime Ministers Narasimha Rao and A B Vajpayee, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa.
