Officials of the Anti-Extortion Cell of Thane police have arrested a criminal wanted in over a dozen robberies committed in Thane and Mumbai.

Officials of the Anti-Extortion Cell of Thane police have arrested a criminal wanted in over a dozen robberies committed in Thane and Mumbai. Identified as Kishor Dattaram Mayekar, 35, a resident of room number 9, Transit Camp, Bandra, the accused is learnt to be closely associated with underworld don Abu Salem.
Sources said senior police inspector, Anti-Extortion Cell Prashant Deshpande received information that Mayekar would be coming to Thane Railway station on May 24.
Following the tip-off, a team of the Anti-Extortion Cell officials led by PSI Anil Honrao and API Suhas Hemade set a trap near Thane Railway station. Mayekar was nabbed at about 6 pm when he came to Thane accompanied by a girl. Cops recovered a country-made revolver and two live cartridges from him.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Mayekar had abducted the 14-year-old girl from Bandra on April 18. A missing complaint was registered with the Bandra police on April 18, by the parents of Pooja Panniker, 14.
After perusing the missing complaint filed by the girl’s parents, Panniker was sent to Bandra. It is learnt that the Bandra police handed the girl over to her parents without registering an offence against Mayekar.
Sources in Anti-Extortion Cell, Thane said Mayekar is a hard nut to crack. He had been involved in several serious offences like attempt to murder, stabbing and robberies. “Mayekar is wanted by Rajapur and Mumbai police in connection with several serious crimes. Mayekar had committed several robberies and dacoities including the one at Mulund branch of Catholic Syrian Bank wherein Mayekar and his associates had decamped with cash totalling to Rs9 lakh”.
It is learnt that Mayekar was also a close associate of notorious criminal Naresh Shirodkar who was killed in an encounter by the Thane crime branch officials on April 19, 2005 at Ghodbunder Road, Thane.
