Even threatened to fire at police before he was arrested

A man got drunk, quarrelled with his first wife, and then pulled out his guns to fire indiscriminately at his son. The latter fled in his two-wheeler, unscathed, but his friend riding pillion was hit in the waist by a bullet.

All these happened in Badlapur late on Wednesday evening. The man who triggered the frenzy was Balaram Mhaskar, an affluent businessman. Brandishing a double-barrelled gun and a pistol, he then rushed to his brother-in-law’s house and started shooting there. Thankfully, the brother-in-law had been tipped off by Mhaskar’s wife and made a timely escape. Tipped off about the incident, a police team rushed in and apprehended Mhaskar, but they, too, for a while, had to stare down the barrel.

According to the police, Mhaskar, who deals in brick chimney, is a resident of Valivali in Badlapur. “He has married twice and stays with both his wives in his bungalow in Badlapur. On Wednesday, Mhaskar assaulted his first wife Gulab for quarrelling with his second wife Surekha,” said Constable Anil Patil of Badlapur police station. “Every time there was a quarrel between his wives, Mhaskar used to thrash Gulab. Vijay Patil, Gulab’s elder brother, often intervened to settle the dispute between Gulab and Surekha. He repeatedly asked Mhaskar not to assault and abuse his sister.”

On Wednesday evening, there was a qurrel between the wives. Mhaskar, who was drunk, assaulted Gulab. Seeing his mother being beaten up by his father, Sudhakar intervened. It enraged Mhaskar even more and he pulled out his guns to shoot Sudhakar. Sudhakar fled for life, with Mhaskar firing indiscriminately at him. As Sudhakar and his friend, Ranjan, who was at the house, tried to escape in a bike, a bullet grazed Ranjan’s waist.

Gulab told Mhaskar that she would tell her brother about the incident. It only infuriated Mhaskar further, and he left for Vijay Patil’s residence in Ambernath with his guns. A scared Gulab called up to warn his brother and the latter fled his house after alerting Ambernath police.

When the police team reached Vijay Patil’s home, they saw a man walking with a gun and asked him to surrender. Mhaskar threatened to open fire at them, but police got the better of him. “We have recovered a double-barrelled gun of which Mhaskar has a license and a pistol for which he does not have a licence. Had we not disarmed him fast, he might have seriously hurt some cops” said Senior Inspector Pravin Bhosle of Ambernath police station.
