Anil aims at 100 million with cheaper handsets

MUMBAI: After selling one million mobile handsets in a week, Reliance Communication (RCom) is now pitching for a subscriber base of 100 million.

It was learnt from sources that due to heavy demand, RCom is likely to place another big order for ultra low-cost handset in the next few weeks. At present, RCom has around 3 million handsets in stock.

On the other hand, Tata Teleservices will launch handsets at Rs 666 to counter RCom’s 777 offer.

Recently, Anil Ambani made a presentation to a select group of investors, laying out ambitious plans for the group’s future. Meanwhile, another major announcement will be made by the Group on Tuesday here in Mumbai.

RCom is gaining massive traction in subscriber additions with its new ultra-low-cost monochrome CDMA handsets - Reliance Classic, company’s own brand for its new models. Since its launch in the first week of May, the company has sold 1 million units in a week at Rs 777, Rs 844 and Rs 888 per unit.

This has placed RCom as the second-largest handset distributor in India, behind Nokia but ahead of Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola. The landmark pricing announcement for Classic monochrome handsets, which was the first time anywhere in the world a handset had been introduced at such price point without any bundling or fine print. It has followed this up with the launch of colour handsets on last week at Rs 1,222, Rs 1,234 and Rs1,299 per unit. Analysts are expecting strong customer pull for its colour handsets in the coming days.

RCom has identified the right growth driver for the CDMA wireless business i.e. handsets and has executed aggressively to source the handsets as 75% of the low-cost handsets purchased by new subscribers while the rest are bought as upgrades or replacement units.

S P Shukla, president, personal business, Reliance Communications, recently said: “When we launched 777 offer, we were confident that potential customers would be excited and by crossing one million handset mark in just a week, we have set a new record in the industry.” The subsidy burden on these handsets majority have been manufactured by ZTE of China is less than $10 on the monochrome phone and around $12 the colour handset, which similar to or lower than those on the CDMA handsets.

Anil Ambani was declared that his compensation would be based on its company’s profits and market price and not dependent on group companies.
