Private bus going towards Dahisar hit an electric pole and got over a footpath

Mumbai witnessed its familiar tale of unsuspecting pavement dwellers getting killed under recklessly driven vehicles on the Western Express Highway, in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

A private bus swerved off the highway and climbed onto a footpath in Dahisar, killing three of a family and seriously injuring two others. The deceased were identified as Mangala Baburao Gaikwad, her son Ajay Raja Yadav, 3, and daughter Maina Baburao Gaikwad, 4. The husband Raja Yadav, 25, and another son Prakash Gaikwad, 8, escaped death by the skin of their teeth, but sustained injuries.

Police said the mishap occurred at around 2am near Gokulanand Junction in Dahisar (E), when a private bus (MH-04-G-2737) on way from National Park towards Dahisar dashed against an electric pole.

“I was sleeping, when a loud noise broke my sleep. I opened my eyes to see that a bus had dashed into an electric pole which fell on me and my son Prakash. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the uncontrolled bus veer onto the footpath and crushed my wife and two children in front of my eyes,” said Raja Yadav.

Yadav said he was not only badly injured but rattled by the accident. “The bus driver abandoned the bus nearby and fled from the spot. I and Prakash were rescued by some auto-rickshaw drivers. They took us to Dahisar police station, where we registered an FIR and then got admitted to Bhagwati Hospital around 2.30 am. Prakash, who suffered abdominal and chest injuries, is in the ICCU,” said Yadav, who got stitches on the forehead.

Later, police recovered the abandoned bus. “During the investigations, we learnt that the bus was given on contract to Hindustan Platinum Company by bus owner DC Gupta. We are in the process of questioning Gupta to get details of the accused driver,” said police inspector R Suple of Dahisar police station.

According to police, the driver is around 30-35 and is a resident of Kalyan.
